Spiritual Health

The foundation of all health, joy, and happiness is the spirit of God, our creator, the lover of our soul.  It is essential that we have a relationship with our creator, the one who made us.  The deeper that relationship, the healthier we will be.  There is a spiritual dimension to life and something we cannot physically see.  There are good spirits working for God and there are evil spirits working against God.  Of course, knowing God is the creator, almighty and all powerful we know that if we are embracing God’s Holy Spirit He is going to cause all things to work for our benefit (Romans 8:28) (which doesn’t always look like we want it to but that’s where faith, trusting His way and not ours comes in).  We want the spirit of God in us to fight the invisible spiritual battles that affect us daily.  Here is a scripture that is short and clear about this:

John 10:10
The thief (satan/devil) comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I (God) came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Reading the bible daily helps keep us connected to our life-giving creator.  The picture of good health is found throughout the bible and reading it helps remind us of the many good words that are like food for our soul.  Because the book is so deep, sometimes reading a book by a gifted interpreter helps us a lot to understand more complex scriptures in the bible or life manual.  There are many good books written on spiritual health and some are recommended here.  Just a sampling of a passage that talks about health is in Psalm 103:2-5

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

This is how we can apply this passage in our lives:  We can thank God by asking God to be blessed in return for the many blessings He gives us including:

  • Forgiveness of all the ways we are doing what is against God and His creation, and against ourselves and others.
  • For His healing of all our diseases
  • Taking us out of whatever wrongful way we are living and exchanging our life for a most inwardly beautiful and glowing life
  • An endless supply of REAL LOVE and Tenderness
  • Goodness in our lives that SATISFIES us and makes us feel youthful!

Our spiritual health also prepares us for our permanent life in heaven, which is why reading the bible is essential.  If you aren’t a Christian I suggest you read the gospel of John in the bible.  It’s real history and will give you an understanding of who Jesus Christ is.  He’s the son of God and of his own will, suffered a brutal death so that He could conquer death and give us each a ‘ticket’ to eternal life in heaven, the place where it’s always sunny, where there’s no sickness or disease, and the streets are paved with gold.

My own spiritual path:

In my early to late 20’s I experimented with going to palm readers and psychics before I met a guy in 1991 who shared the story of Jesus with me.  It was easy to accept God because I could just look at nature and see the creator there.  However, I decided I would just need to take a “leap of faith” and accept Jesus as being real even though I wasn’t sure who this Jesus was.  I had heard about Jesus and in my mind He was associated with hypocrites and weak people, but my good friend challenged me to take that leap of faith and see what happens.  Well, I was unaware of the strength of spirituality and I began a week-long struggle of what felt like spirits fighting over my soul.  It was hard for me to concentrate and very hard to look people in the eye.  I didn’t understand it.  When I told my friend, he said I needed to denounce any faith or trusting I had ever given to anything in the spirit world outside of The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  I went through my memory bank and did that.  It took about a week and I returned to normal.

I felt new, fresh, and alive!  I didn’t understand it and it took me years before I felt a deep connection to Jesus even though I felt God’s love immediately.  Now, Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit are mine!  And Jesus is definitely an essential key.  It’s like a three piece puzzle and if you’re missing a piece, you don’t have a picture. They help me throughout every aspect of my life.  Here are the things I strive for to have good spiritual health:

  • Remember that I am a sinner, saved by grace
  • Read something from the bible every day
  • Pray daily for those whom I love, those people in my life, other Christians around the world, our culture, and life concerns
  • Act on things that will fulfill the purpose He put me here for
  • Reflect the love and grace that God has given to me
  • Enjoy the small stuff

Essential to Spiritual Health

Finding a good church is essential to your spiritual health and your sense of belonging.  Belonging to a good church will give you a deeper understanding of God through biblical teaching and a sense of belonging to a body of believers in Christ – something much bigger than yourself.  You will get to know other Christians and pray for them and them for you as we all need it daily and even more so in difficult times in our lives.  Giving and receiving prayers and sometimes opportunities for serving in various ways, preparing meals or doing other things come up and challenge and strengthen your faith.  Your church becomes your spiritual or immediate Christian family, with the church at large being your large family in which you are a part of.

Perhaps you are part of Christian church, good for you!  If you are not just say, “God, please direct me to the church you want me to be a part of.”  God will hear you and direct you.  He is all around us, a concept we will not fully understand because our knowledge and wisdom is not infinite like God’s.  Making peace with things only God has control over is another essential to having good spiritual health.
